Die Walt Disney Archives (Walt-Disney-Archive) sind die Archive der Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, die sich mit Walt Disney und der Geschichte seines Filmstudios beschäftigen.

Entstehung[Bearbeiten]

Als die Bücherei der UCLA vergeblich bei Disney anfragte, einen Teil der Disney-Unterlagen bei sich zu lagern, erfuhr Bibliothekar Dave Smith, dass die Disney-Company versuchte, herauszufinden, was sie mit Walt Disneys Korrespondenz-Schreiben und den Dingen in seinem Büro tun sollte.[1] Später wurde daraus der Wunsch, die Geschichte des gesamten Unternehmens zu bewahren. Nachdem Smith Interesse daran zeigte, beauftragten sie ihn, ein Angebot für sie zu erstellen. Da er noch bei der UCLA arbeitete, ließ er sich beurlauben und untersuchte zwei Monate lang die verschiedenen Abteilungen von Disney, um mehr über die Qualität und Quantität der historischen Materialien zu erfahren, die sie aufbewahrt hatten.[2]

Smiths Büro (Raum 3H-1) war ganz in der Nähe von Walt Disneys Büro im ursprünglichen Animationsgebäude (Suite 3H).[3] Seine erste Aufgabe bestand darin, alle Gegenstände in Walt Disneys Büro zu dokumentieren, die dort seit seinem Tod im Dezember 1966 vier Jahre zuvor gelagert worden waren und unberührt geblieben waren. Dazu fotografierte er am 3. November 1969 ausgiebig das Büro, vermaß es und führte Inventur über dessen Inhalt. Insgesamt wurden 2269 Gegenstände in 464 Kisten inventarisiert und eingelagert, darunter auch Möbel und Dokumente.[3] Smiths damalige Arbeit ermöglichte es dem Unternehmen, Disneys Büro 2015 für eine Installation nachzubilden.[4]

Beim Aufbau der vorgeschlagenen Archive orientierte er sich an der Struktur der Präsidentenbibliotheken wie die Harry S. Truman Library in Missouri, die neben einer Bibliothek auch ein Museum und eine Sammlung von Material über den Präsidenten enthalten.[1]

Im Dezember 1969 schloss Dave seine Beratertätigkeit ab und reichte kurz darauf im Januar 1970 den Vorschlag zur Einrichtung eines Unternehmensarchivs ein. Seinen „Vorschlag für die Einrichtung eines Walt Disney Archivs und Museums“ leitete er wie folgt ein:

„Vor mehr als einem Jahr begann die Disney-Organisation, über die Einrichtung eines Walt-Disney-Archivs nachzudenken. Zunächst war der Gedanke, die persönlichen Erinnerungsstücke von Walt Disney selbst zu sammeln und aufzubewahren, aber es wurde schnell klar, dass es unmöglich wäre, den Mann von der Organisation, die er gegründet hat, zu trennen. Ein Walt-Disney-Archiv müsste nicht nur ein Archiv von Walt Disney sein, sondern auch des Studios, von Disneyland, von WED, von Retlaw und von Walt Disney World, mit anderen Worten, von allen Teilen des Unternehmens.“[5]

Smith nannte sieben Gründe zur Errichtung eines Disney-Archivs:

  1. Die Unterstützung des Leiters der Rechtsabteilung durch die Bereitstellung von Unterlagen für Rechtsstreitigkeiten.
  2. Die Bereitstellung von Material für Pressemitteilungen und Werbezwecke, was in einem Unternehmen, das regelmäßig alte Filme veröffentlicht, besonders wichtig ist.
  3. Es dient als Hilfe bei der Einarbeitung neuer Mitarbeiter und bei der Personalschulung für verantwortungsvollere Positionen.
  4. Außerdem dient es der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, da es den wachsenden Bedarf an allgemeinen historischen Informationen über Walt Disney und sein Unternehmen sättigt.
  5. Ein Archiv stellt Informationen für ernsthafte Forscher bereit, die für das Verfassen von Büchern, Artikeln und Dissertationen über das Unternehmen wichtig sind.
  6. Die Bereitstellung von Daten über wichtige Entscheidungen in der Vergangenheit dienen als Orientierungshilfe für aktuelle Entscheidungen des Managements dienen und helfen, frühere Fehler zu wiederholen.
  7. Bereitstellung von historischem Material zur Verkaufsförderung des aktuellen Absatzes, etwa zu Jubiläen.[1]

Ein halbes Jahr später wurde Smith von Walt Disneys Bruder Roy O. Disney[4] zu diesem Zweck eingestellt und das Disney-Archiv gegründet.[2][1] Die Pressemitteilung damals verkündete unter dem Titel „Walt Disney Archives wird gegründet“:

„Walt Disney Productions und die Disney-Familie haben die Gründung der Walt Disney Archives bekannt gegeben. Ziel des Archivs ist es, historisches Material über Walt Disney und die gesamte Disney-Organisation zu sammeln, zu bewahren, zu katalogisieren und zum Studium und zur Nutzung bereitzustellen.
Obwohl der Schwerpunkt der Sammlung auf Walt Disneys persönlichen Unterlagen und Geschäftsakten liegen wird, wird das Archiv auch audiovisuell ausgerichtet sein und Möglichkeiten für das wissenschaftliche Studium der Filmprodukte des Studios, des Merchandising der Figuren, der Kunstwerke, der Publikationen, der Auszeichnungen, der Fotos und anderer Geschäftsunterlagen bieten. [...]“[6]

Die Disney-Archive[Bearbeiten]

Die Disney-Archive wurden am 22. Juni 1970 im Auftrag von Roy O. Disney gegründet[4], um die Geschichte seines Bruders zu wahren. Disney-Legende Dave Smith zu der Zeit der einzige Angestellte dieser Abteilung. Beim Material-Sammeln fürs Archiv traf er manchmal auf Widerwillen der anderen Studio-Mitarbeiter.[1]

Madeleine Wheeler, die Sekretärin von Roy O. Disney, verwaltete die recherchierte Familiengeschichte, das Familienfotoalbum von Flora Disney sowie die Eintrittskarte Nr. 1 von Disneyland Anaheim, die ihr Vorgesetzter am Eröffnungstag für einen Dollar gekauft hatte, und vieles mehr, das sie nach und nach dem Archiv zur Verfügung stellte.[1]

Mit der Juli-Ausgabe 1983 des Disney Channel Magazine begann Dave Smith in der Reihe Exploring the Archives (später nur Archives) damit, Fragen von Zuschauern des Disney Channel zu beantworten.

„In den ersten Monaten musste ich mir die Fragen selbst ausdenken, weil noch niemand etwas davon wusste! Aber das hielt nicht lange an. Schon bald kam ein ständiger Strom von Fragen herein, und das hat sich bis heute gehalten.“[7]

In den darauffolgenden dreißig Jahren wurde seine Kolumne unter dem Namen Ask Dave in verschiedenen Publikationen fortgesetzt, darunter das Disney Magazine, online beim Disney Insider und zuletzt der D23-Website.[8][9] Über die von ihm geschriebene Disney-Enzyklopädie „Disney A to Z“ sagt Smith, dass sie für ihn als Nachschlagwerk für die häufigsten Fragen entstand.

Als 1986 die Publicity- und Still-Camera-Abteilungen zum Archiv hinzugefügt wurden, wurde eine Photo Library Teil des Archivs. Dave wurde im Mai 1991 zum Archivdirektor ernannt und hatte vier Mitarbeiter, die mit ihm zusammenarbeiteten. 1994 wurde das Roy O. Disney Building durch das Northridge-Erdbeben beschädigt, so dass die Walt Disney Archives darin gezwungen waren, ihre Büros und Materialien vorübergehend an einen anderen Ort zu verlegen und die historischen Artefakte einzulagern.[10]

Einen durchschnittlichen Arbeitstag im Archiv beschrieb Smith 2010 wie folgt:

„Normalerweise beantworte ich als erstes die E-Mails, die sich über Nacht angesammelt haben - es sind meist ein Dutzend oder mehr. Einige Fragen sind einfach und können aus dem Stegreif beantwortet werden, aber bei anderen muss ich etwas recherchieren. Im Laufe des Tages muss ich viel lesen - Veröffentlichungen und Pressemitteilungen, die aus dem gesamten Unternehmen eintreffen, sowie Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenartikel über Disney. Je nachdem, was ich lese, muss ich vielleicht einen neuen Eintrag zu ‚Disney A to Z‘ hinzufügen oder eine Chronologie der Parkattraktionen/Restaurants/Shops aktualisieren. Tagsüber erhalten wir telefonische Anfragen, und die Leute kommen vorbei, um sich zu informieren. Wir haben oft Führungen für Mitarbeiter der Parks, die uns besuchen. (Jeden Montagmorgen gebe ich neuen Mitarbeitern des Unternehmens eine Einweisung.) Oft bekomme ich Bücher, Zeitschriften und andere Materialien zum Korrekturlesen/Faktenprüfen. Dann gibt es vielleicht eine Pressevorführung eines neuen Disney-Films.“[11]

Am 24. Juni 2010, vierzig Jahre nach seinem Arbeitsbeginn bei Disney, kündigte Smith seinen baldigen Ruhestand an, sein Posten als Archivdirektor ging an Becky Cline, die ihre Arbeit im Archiv 1994 als Smiths Sekretärin begann[10]. Nach seiner Pensionierung an seinem 70. Geburtstag[1] arbeitete er als Berater für Disney[4] unter dem Titel Chief Archivist Emeritus[12].

Seit 2015 gibt es zur D23 Expo die Walt Disney Archives Stage als neue Präsentationsbühne[13].

Für die „Jeopardy“-Sendung vom 20. April 2016 besuchte die „Jeopardy“-Crew die Disney-Archive.[14] Im Juli 2016 suchten Mitarbeiter der Archive Fotos für den online-Shop Disney Fine Arts aus, damit diese dort auf Leinwand gedruckt verkauft werden können.[15]

2019 wurde durch die Übernahme von 20th Century Fox das Archiv erheblich erweitert: Die vorherigen 4 Millionen Negative und Dias der Walt Disney Archives Photo Library wurde um über 20 Millionen Negative, Abzüge und digitale Dateien ergänzt, die Fox Archives in die Disney-Archive integriert und deren Mitarbeiter übernommen. 2023 sind in der Photo Library etwa 25 Millionen Bilder.[16]

Für die Disney+-Reihe „Prop Culture“ wurden 2020 diverse Exponate aus den Disney-Archiven geholt.[17]

2021 ist das Walt Disney-Archiv eine Abteilung mit 30 Mitarbeitern, die auf Forschung, Sammlungen, Ausstellungen, Fotografie, Digitalisierung und Betrieb spezialisiert sind.[10] Im selben Jahr erschien die Dokumentation „Adventure Thru the Walt Disney Archives“ auf Disney+.[18]

2023 beschrieb Becky Cline einen durchschnittlichen Arbeitstag im Archiv wie folgt:

„An einem normalen Tag weiß ich nie wirklich, was passieren wird, wenn ich zur Tür hereinkomme. Wir beaufsichtigen weltweit alles, was das Unternehmen in historischer Hinsicht zu bieten hat. Es geht also nicht nur um die Marke Disney, sondern auch um die Archive für ABC, Fox, Lucasfilm, Marvel, Walt Disney Imagineering, National Geographic und all diese großen, großen Gruppen, die unter das Dach der Walt Disney Company fallen. Wir erhalten Anrufe aus der ganzen Welt, und wir sind auch eine Art Clearingstelle für Informationen und erhalten viele Anrufe aus dem Unternehmen. Wo kann ich dieses Foto bekommen? In welchem Buch soll ich es finden?' Und dann habe ich Meetings, bei denen ich mich mit Forschern, Filmemachern, Dokumentarfilmern und Leuten treffe, die sich einige unserer Merchandising-Artikel ansehen wollen, um unsere Bemühungen im Bereich der Verbraucherprodukte zu unterstützen. Wir arbeiten auch sehr eng mit D23 zusammen, dem offiziellen Disney-Fanclub.“[19]

Ein Ergebnis dieser Zusammenarbeit ist zum Beispiel das Geschenk für D23-Goldmitglieder 2016[20] und 2021[21], dem viele Faksimiles beilagen.

Zur Gründung der Archive war ihr Hauptsitz das Büro 3H-1 im Animation Building, doch mit dem Wachsen der Sammlung wechselte der Sitz der Archive im Lauf der Jahre:

  • 3H-1 im Animation Building (1970 – Frühling 1972)
  • Casting Building (Frühling 1972 – Juni 1976)
  • Roy O. Disney Building (Juni 1976 – September 1997)
  • Frank G. Wells Building (September 1997 – heute)[10]
