The Ballad of Davy Crockett
The Ballad of Davy Crockett ist eine Ballade und ein Volkssong aus der Feder von George Bruns und Tom W. Blackburn. Er wurde für die Fernsehserie Davy Crockett geschrieben.
Der Song war vom 26. März 1955 bis zum 14. Mai 1955 auf dem 1. Platz der Cash Box Magazine Best Selling Record Charts. Der Song blieb auch einige Zeit fester Bestandteil der Billboard Charts.
Veröffentlichung[Bearbeiten]
Der Erfolg des Liedes kam mit der ersten Disneyland-Folge The Disneyland Story aus dem Jahre 1954. Hier sang der damals unbekannte Fess Parker zum allerersten Mal die Ballade über das Leben von Davy Crockett.
Am 14. Dezember 1954 wurde schließlich die erste Folge der Serie erfolgreich ausgestrahlt.
Wenig später wurde dieser Song von Bill Hayes aufgenommen, die Platte wurde so erfolgreich, dass man sich entschied den Song nochmals mit Fess Parker aufzunehmen und dann wenig später mit Tennessee Ernie Ford. Alle samt wurden im Jahre 1955 aufgenommen.
Für die Finnische Version des Lied stellt sich der Sänger Kauko Käyhkö zur Verfügung. Die Übersetzung schrieb Reino Helismaa. In Norwegen übersetzte Arne Bendiksen den Song und sang ihn selbst.
Eine inoffizielle Veröffentlichung gab es von der Countrygruppe Sons of the Pioneers.
Im Walt Disney's Magazine wurde eine gekürzte Version des Liedtextes veröffentlicht.
Insgesamt wurden etwa 10 Millionen Schallplatten verkauft.

Parodien und Hommagen[Bearbeiten]
Der Song selbst wurde häufig parodiert und neuaufgenommen.
1967 machten sich The Supremes daran mit ihrem Album Diana Ross & The Supremes Sing Disney Classics, dem Lied eine Neuauflage zu spendieren. Neben der neuen Version von Davy Crokett war auch das Lied Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious enthalten. Aber das Album wurde vorerst eingelagert, da es interne Probleme der Band gab. Später kamen einige Auszüge an die Öffentlichkeit.
Die Attraktion Country Bear Jamboree enthält eine gekürzte und zensierte Version des Songs.
Die Mannheim Steamroller veröffentlichten im Jahre 1999 das Album Mannheim Steamroller Meets the Mouse, das in Zusammenarbeit von American Gramaphone und Walt Disney Records entstand.
They Might Be Giants veröffentlichten für das Album Disney Music Block Party, den Song als Bonus in der Space Version.
Die Riders in the Sky veröffentlichten das Album Riders in the Sky Present: Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier und pressten ihre Version des Liedes auf die CD.
Tim Curry parodierte den Song für den Film Rocky Horror Picture Show aus dem Jahre 1975.
