Little Golden Books

Die Little Golden Books ist eine Kinderbuchreihe, deren erste Ausgaben 1942 erschienen. "The Poky Little Puppy", das achte Buch der Reihe, ist das meistverkaufte Kinderbuch aller Zeiten. Bekannte Franchises und Figuren, die in der Buchreihe auftraten, sind zum Beispiel die Sesamstraße, die Muppets, Looney Tunes, Barbie, die Power Rangers, Thomas der Lokomotivführer und Disney.

Entstehung der Little Golden Books

Die beiden Verlage hinter den Little Golden Books, Western Publishing‏ und Simon & Schuster, teilten sich eine Druckerei, weshalb sich zwischen den beiden Verlagen eine Partnerschaft bildete. 1938 führte dies zum ersten gemeinsamen Werk, "A Children's History".

Georges Duplaix war 1940 Leiter der Artists and Writers Guild Inc., einer Abteilung von Western Publishing. Als er neue Kinderbücher beauftragte, kam ihm die Idee, ein farbenfroheres, haltbareres und günstigeres Kinderbuch zu produzieren als die damaligen, die für zwei bis drei Dollar verkauft wurden. Durch seine Kollegin Lucile Olge konnte sich Duplaix mit seiner Idee an Albert Leventhal und Leon Shimkin wenden, die beide für Simon & Schuster arbeiteten. Die Gruppe der beiden Verlage plante die Veröffentlichung von zwölf Büchern, der Little Golden Books Reihe, in der jedes Buch 42 Seiten umfassen und in Klammern gebunden werden sollte. Der anfangs geplante Preis von 50 Cent pro Buch würde die Reihe in Konkurrenz zu anderen 50-Cent-Büchern setzen, weshalb der Preis durch doppelte Auflage halbiert wurde.

Als Herausgeberin wurde Dr. Mary Reed, Professorin am Teachers College der Universität Columbia eingesetzt. Die ersten zwölf Bücher erschienen 1942 und erreichten binnen der ersten fünf Monate drei Auflagen mit insgesamt 1,5 Millionen Exemplaren.

Schon seit 1944 erschienen Little Golden Books in Kooperation mit Disney, doch erst ab 1947 wurden diese in einem schnelleren und regelmäßigen Tempo veröffentlicht. Die ersten drei Ausgaben erschienen mit Schutzumschlag und wurden noch Walt Disney's Little Library betitelt, obwohl sie im selben Format und Umfang waren wie die Hauptreihe. Seit 1947 erschienen die Bücher als „a Little Golden Book“ wie die Hauptreihe, wurde aber separat nummeriert: Vor der Ausgabennummer kam ein D wie Disney.
Mit der Ausstrahlung der Fernsehsendung „Mickey Mouse Club“ änderte sich die Benennung der Reihe wieder: Um von der Bekanntheit der Sendung zu profitieren, hieß die Reihe nun Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Club Books und hatten einen roten Buchrücken voller Micky-Maus-Köpfe statt dem bekannten goldenen Buchrücken der Hauptreihe, was auch auf spätere Auflagen der vorher entstandenen Bände gedruckt wurde. 1957 wurde dieser Aufdruck und Buchrücken langsam wieder zugunsten des Aufdrucks „a Little Golden Book“ entfernt. Im Ausgabenindex, der in den einzelnen Ausgaben gedruckt wurde, sind die D-Ausgaben in derselben Liste aufgezählt wie die Ausgaben von Sesame Street, The Pink Panther und die Warner Bros. Books, die hingegen keine separaten Nummern bekamen.
Ab der Ausstrahlung von The New Mickey Mouse Club 1977 kam kurze Zeit zum aufgedruckten „a Little Golden Book“ das Logo der Sendung dazu, es blieb beim goldenen Buchrücken.
1978 erschien die letzte Disney-Little-Golden-Book-Ausgabe mit einer D-Buchnummer: Danach veröffentlichte Bücher bekamen einen längeren Code. Die reguläre Reihe zog ein Jahr später mit dieser Nummerierung nach.

Disney-Ausgaben

Jeder Band bekam eine Nummer, die in der Regel neben dem Preis oder gegenüber dem Preis in der oberen linken Ecke zu finden ist.

D-Code (USA)

Diese Liste nennt die Nummern und Reihenfolge der US-amerikanischen Ausgaben. In Australien erschienen ebenfalls englischsprachige Disney-Ausgaben der Little Golden Books unter dem D-Code, allerdings in anderer Reihenfolge.

In Deutschland erschienen Anfang der Fünfziger beim Kurt-Desch-Verlag die Reihe Ein goldenes Kinderbuch, bei der es sich um deutschsprachige Ausgaben ausgewählter Little Golden Books handelt. Die Disney-Ausgaben der Little Golden Books wurden in Deutschland unter vielen Namen veröffentlicht, unter anderem Kleine Disney Bilderbücher bei Blüchert und Delphin, Happy Buch bei Delphin, Walt Disneys Junior bei Ehapa und zuletzt Disney Die Gold-Edition bei Hachette.
